Bio

Ernesto Grey portrait

Ernesto Grey is a film composer, music producer, and mixing engineer based in Brooklyn, New York.

He first established himself as a producer within Austin's independent music scene, where he spent six years recording, producing, and mixing records for emerging artists. His work was recognized by the Austin Music Awards for four consecutive years, contributing to nominations across the Best Experimental, Best New Act, Best Rock, and Album of the Year categories.

Alongside his work as a record producer, Grey has composed music for more than a dozen short films, a pursuit that began in his teenage years and has since become the primary focus of his career. Grey's working philosophy is driven by the belief that the most enduring art comes from a clearly defined point of view. Through years of producing records, he's developed an approach centered on uncovering what makes an artist's voice unmistakably their own. Today, he brings that same philosophy to film, creating scores that emerge from the identity of each story rather than from convention.

Born and raised in northern Mexico, Grey did not grow up in a family of creatives, and a career in the arts wasn't something he considered until after high school. Shortly after immigrating to the United States at the age of twelve, he borrowed his sister's toy keyboard to teach himself his first songs through YouTube tutorials. Since then, his exploration as an artist has been guided by a comfort with inexperience, the belief that not knowing the "correct" way to do something can be a catalyst for originality. It's no coincidence that Grey cites Trent Reznor and Jonny Greenwood among his influences, not simply for their rebellious sound, but for the way they carried fully formed artistic identities from the world of bands into cinema, allowing each score to feel authored rather than merely functional.

Now based in Brooklyn, New York, Grey divides his time between producing and mixing records, composing for film, and performing with his electronic art-pop project Alma Muñeca. He also works as an assistant audio engineer at the legendary Sear Sound Studios, continuing to refine a practice centered on helping every project discover its own unmistakable voice.
